Our research asks under what conditions conversational AI increases the capacity of public institutions and law firms. We study data protection, professional obligations, integration with existing systems and handovers to people together.

The German data protection authorities’ guidance focuses on LLM applications commonly offered as chatbots. It addresses processing purposes, legal bases, data access, deletion and privacy by design.

An exploratory study of three government chatbots in Latvia, Vienna and Bonn distinguishes providing information from delivering integrated digital public-service transactions. It offers an early basis for our integration questions, rather than an evaluation of today’s LLM systems.

Research in practice
Our projects give these questions a practical setting. On TalBot for IHK Berlin, we work on approved information sources, answer evaluation and routing to the appropriate advisers. Drift-ai.org connects migration information with access to independent lawyers.
